30 Seconds To Mars has been opening it’s shows with a song known on the setlist as only “Carmina”.  It is in fact, “O Fortuna”, a Latin poem written in the 13th centuray and in 1935 was set to music as part of Carmina Burana by Carl Orff.

The lyrics are especially fitting for tonight.

English

Fortune,
like the moon
you are changeable,
ever waxing
and waning;
hateful life
first oppresses
and then soothes
as the sharp mind takes it;
poverty
and power
it melts them like ice.

Fate – monstrous
and empty,
you whirling wheel,
you are malevolent,
well-being is vain
and always fades to nothing,
shadowed
and veiled
you plague me too;
now, for pleasure,
I bring my bare back
to your perversity.

Fate – in health
and virtue –
is against me,
driven on
and weighted down,
always enslaved.
So at this hour
without delay
pluck the vibrating strings;
since Fate
strikes down the strong man,
everyone weep with me!

Confirmation of acceptance is important in many instances, but this one couldn’t be more special. The Boston Marathon any year is important, but this one couldn’t be more special. The word “celebrate” keeps coming to me when I think of this coming April 21st in Boston. We have gone through so much- each of us at different stages of recovery. I often say that for almost all of us there was someone that day who had it worse- so much worse. We can not and will not forget those who are still battling the challenges that where thrown upon them. And for me, I want to show up this year and honor them by continuing to run, continuing to live and strive.  I want to celebrate all that is beautiful on that day. All the gorgeous countryside, the towns, the people, the cheers, the signs, the college girls screaming, the hills, the valleys. Everything. Celebrate it. Laugh as I’m running, like I did last year. Cry as I’m running like I did last year. To be a part of so many peoples journeys to Boston and become one race. With a million reasons. And one goal. To finish.

The Kid: This is it

joeymacthekid:

That phrase “this is it” can mean different things. What it means for me now is : here I am in my dressing room fully engaged in the performing of a show that I have been waiting to do for a long time. And very quickly it becomes about the whole “beautiful grind”. The quieting of me, the resting…
